1. Consider what can happen without a business continuity plan in place.

In fact PwC reported that “87% of consumers are even willing to walk away and take their business elsewhere if, or when, a data breach occurs.” 

Whether it’s bad weather, an unexpected global pandemic, or a data breach, having a plan in place to tackle unexpected events is crucial to helping your business maintain a positive reputation. 

2. Define the most important aspects of your organization’s business continuity plan.

It’s crucial to have a written, concrete plan in place that includes:

  • Key components of your business, including critical applications. 
  • Steps for how to recover those key business functions.
  • The individuals who will carry out these functions. 

With new technology, advancements, and issues, business continuity plans need to be updated more frequently now.

3. Consistently update and test your business continuity plan. 

First, you’ll want to complete the basic steps for your business continuity plan. As a reminder, those are: 

  • Gather the information you need. 
  • Create a concrete, written plan. 
  • Ensure everyone involved is aware of their roles and responsibilities. 

But, your process isn’t over yet. Once you have your plan in place, you’ll need to: 

  • Create a consistent review and update process. With frequently changing and improving technology, you may need to update your process more frequently than you have in the past in order to keep up. This process will have a different timeline for every organization, so it’s important that you have one in place that works for your business. 
  • Test to ensure your plan works. Make sure your plan works! If you have a plan in place but are unsure it will work in an emergency, your organization might find itself struggling to carry out the plan. 
  • Make updates according to your tests and reviews. Once you have tested the plan and found where you need to make updates, it’s important to schedule times to collaborate with your team members and put those revisions into place for your business continuity plan as needed.
